Astrophysics
My research ranges from unravelling the genesis of our Galaxy and mapping its amount of mass and dark matter, to developing generative and machine-learning models to tackle and digest vast amounts of multi-flavoured survey data.
Statistics and Machine Learning
I have recently become interested in developing simple yet powerful statistical and machine-learning models to analyse and exploit big survey data. For example, I am currently leading the efforts in developing a generative model to infer the properties of millions of stars using survey data (Lux)
Big data
I am a big fan of combining different flavours of astronomical data. For example, I like working with spectroscopic data from the APOGEE survey and astrometric data from the Gaia mission to learn new things about our Galaxy. Thus, I spend a lot of time analysing/modelling big data from large-scale surveys of the Milky Way. I also like comparing these data to big data from cosmological numerical simulations (e.g., FIRE, EAGLE, E-MOSAICS)
